How to Waterproof Doc Martens

Doc Martens are an extraordinary shoe, and I remember having several pairs as I grew up in the ’80s and ‘90s.

Doc Martens began in 1901 in the English Midlands. At the heart of the English shoe industry, the footwear earned a stellar reputation for sturdy work boots. They were initially made for people suffering from foot pain from standing on their feet all day at work.

They have developed into comfortable shoes that have been used throughout the world. And with proper care and waterproofing, they will last forever!

How to Waterproof Doc Martens

Different Types of Leather

Docs come in many different varieties of leather, and each will respond differently to waterproofing.

  • Smooth Leather is the epitome of their footwear. It’s famous for its stiffness and durability when you first wear them, and this leather from Argentina molds to your foot, getting comfier with each step.
  • Nappa and Virginia Leathers are fine-grain leathers that are soft and smooth. The leather is lightweight and will stretch well, and are incredibly comfortable as soon as you put them on.
  • Patent Lamper Leather is more relaxed than Smooth Leather and is one of the brands of leather that comes pretty close to already being waterproof.
  • Vegan Leather. This “leather” called Felix is an alternative to the original Smooth Leather, and it’s totally vegan. It’s made from a microfiber and polymer-synthetic material and bears an uncanny resemblance to leather.
  • Gaucho/Crazy Horse leather comes from Thailand and is made with a different technique that allows impressions along the crease. This creates that distressed brown look.

Aren’t Doc Martens Already Waterproof?

They actually aren’t. The majority of Doc Martens aren’t waterproof or water-resistant. Though they are highly durable, the leather is thin and will not protect against water or snow.

How to Waterproof Doc Martens

How Do I Make My Doc Martens Waterproof?

Thankfully, there are several products on the market you can buy that will help protect your Docs against the weather.

The most convenient method is using a waterproof spray. Though they won’t make your Docs totally waterproof, they will provide a protective coat. Different waterproof sprays are used for other materials.

You’ll need to be sure you are using the correct spray for your Doc Marten’s material.

When using a waterproof spray on your Docs, use this guide:

  • Remove the laces from your Docs and wipe them down with a clean cloth.
  • Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area.
  • Using a distance of 6-8 inches, spray the entire shoe with the waterproof spray.
  • Pay close attention to the seams where the outsole connects to the shoe.
  • Lightly spray the shoe, but don’t saturate it.
  • On suede or nubuck materials, you may need to use 2-3 coats.
